The organization was founded in 1961, by Peter Benenson. The British advocate read about the imprisonment of two Portuguese students. Their crime was nothing more then proposing a toast to freedom. He wrote an article to The Observer, calling for action. What started out as the outcry of one man against injustice turned into a worldwide organization that has continued his fight ever since.
Amnesty International is an organization that is active in more than a 150 countries in the world. The goal of the organization is to promote human rights worldwide. We do this by spreading awareness about the existence of human rights and the ways they might be violated. We also hold governments accountable when their actions are in violation with human rights, for example by writing letters that urge them to change their behaviour.
We have already come a long way since Amnesty was founded, more than 50 years ago, but still improvements can be made!
